Legless Tom is both a noun and a trait, a Demon so specific that the collection simply made him his own kind, which is either an honor or a bureaucratic accident and Tom enjoys not clarifying. He lost the legs somewhere brutal and gained, in exchange, a refusal to be diminished by it that borders on offensive. He fights, drinks, and schemes from a fixed elevation and dares you to mention it. In the wars a man who could not run learned very quickly how to make sure the fight came to him on his terms, and Tom perfected it. When the wars ended, everyone else discovered they had nowhere to march; Tom had made peace with staying put a long time ago. He and the English Pilot drink together for hours, one who cannot go home and one who cannot walk there, laughing at a world that assumed either of them would slow down. He is, without argument, the most disciplined drinker in the entire dojo, which everyone agrees is a genuine and remarkable discipline, and not at all the one they were hoping he would master.
