Fuzen means incompleteness, and where Assassin Fuzen turned the missing piece into a profession, Mao Fuzen turned it into a pilgrimage. Something has always felt unfinished, one part of the picture forever just out of frame, and Mao has spent a life chasing whatever it is across battlefields and bottles and the length of the dojo bar. In the wars the searching made him fearless, because a man looking for the thing that completes him does not much fear the things that could end him. When the wars ended, the search did not; it simply lost its excuse. So Mao wanders still, half-formed and wholly compelling, convinced the missing piece is in the next fight, the next drink, the next room. It never is. He suspects, on his darker nights, that the incompleteness is the point, and that finishing was never on the table. He is remarkably disciplined about his endless search and hopeless about ever stopping to enjoy a single thing he finds, which is, he suspects, the whole problem.
