Diary
They called him Akuma back when the war still had teeth, a name he wore like a second scar because it made grown men flinch and he liked that more than he ever admitted. Under the sakura at Nishiyama, petals falling like slow confetti, he had a woman half convinced and his own hand halfway to her obi when something in his chest just quit, some old ghost of discipline reaching up from the grave to grab his wrist. He mistook the shame for enlightenment and shaved his head the next morning, swore off flesh and floor prices alike, told the monks at the temple he was done being a demon. The vow lasted eleven days, which is eleven days longer than any of his other vows, before he was back gambling on dice games behind the prayer hall and blaming Buddha for bad luck. Akuma still meditates every dawn, mostly to steady his hands before he apes into whatever degenerate scheme the day offers, and he laughs the darkest laugh in the dojo when someone calls him disciplined.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Paper screens at night. The Shoji Night fighters were born in the quiet hours, when the market sleeps and only the committed are still at their screens.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
The organization runs deep. The Yakuza Tattoo Sleeve fighters have commitments that predated the Dojo and will outlast it.
'Akuma' means devil, a name he didn't choose. The survivors needed a word bigger than soldier for what he did on the field, and it stuck.
Authority through opacity. The Dark Spectacles fighters reveal nothing through their eyes and receive everything through them.
Aged. Sharp. The Short Spiky Grey fighters have been here long enough for color to leave — and found that what remained is more pointed than before.
Heavy, ceramic, purpose-built for one thing and used for another. The Giant Sake Bottle fighters are creative about their arsenal.
