Ikari's blade used to answer to a shogun; now it answers to whatever wallet wanders too close to the treeline. He robbed a pack of degens among the pines outside the old dojo grounds, not for the JPEGs they clutched like prayer beads but for the pure clean feeling of a fight that finally had a face on it, and the vein in his temple throbbed like a war drum the whole time. "Anger is a wind that blows out the lamp of the mind," his old sensei used to say, and Ikari has spent years agreeing with him in theory and disproving him in practice every single day since. Confidence surged through him after, hot and stupid, the same rush he used to get cutting down real enemies before the wars ended and left him nothing to swing at but bar tabs and rug pullers. He tells himself better days are coming, discipline included, right after this one last score, right after this one last shout into the trees that no longer echo anything back but his own name.
