Diary
Drooling Azuma sat cross-legged on the dojo roof tiles, a family bag of rice crackers wedged between his knees like it was a war trophy, jawing at Masumi about the trade that would finally make him whole again. He talked with his mouth full, spraying crumbs into the night air, describing leverage positions and moon targets with the same fire his ancestors once reserved for the tip of a blade. Masumi just nodded, half listening, while Azuma's master plan ballooned bigger and dumber with every gulp of cheap sake, until the chart in his head looked less like a strategy and more like a dragon eating its own tail. When the position rugged by morning, wiping every last coin and every last shred of the discipline he swore he'd rebuild, he did not weep quietly like the old masters taught. He stood, bloated and roaring, and declared to the empty courtyard that seppuku was the only honorable exit left, then immediately asked if anyone had snacks for the ceremony first.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Hidden in plain sight. The Night Forest fighters do most of their work in the dark — not secretively, but quietly. They don't need an audience.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
No clothing needed. The Shirtless Runt fighters removed every layer between themselves and the fight. Maximum exposure. Maximum honesty.
'Azuma' — east, the rising sun. Once a warrior whose hunger for the fight rose every morning: first over the wall, last off the field. Peacetime left the hunger nowhere to go.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Crow spirit, long nose, ancient power. The Tengu Mask fighters are wearing something that predates the Dojo — something older that chose to be here.
A rat. Named. With opinions. Mr. Rumi The Rat is a familiar, a co-combatant, and probably the one with the plan. The fighter is the muscle.
