Diary
Drooling Azuma once split armor with a sword arm that fed on war, and now that the wars are gone that same hunger just paces around inside him howling for anything, anything at all, to conquer. On a misty morning he found it in Bob, some rumpled roadside prophet, and after twenty minutes of loud haggling and louder promises Azuma walked away clutching a damp paper bag of mushrooms like he had personally sacked a castle. He struts through the dojo courtyard now chest puffed to absurd proportions, greeting startled disciples with a grin that says he has ascended, that he has aped into the one true alpha, that the floor of his own dignity has fully rugged and he does not care. He swears this is the beginning of discipline, of quiet mountain mornings and clean lungs, right before he trips over a training dummy and blames the mist for his own two clumsy feet. Somewhere beneath the swagger a real samurai still kneels waiting for a war worth fighting, but today Azuma feeds him mushrooms and calls it victory.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Red moon, heightened stakes. The Red High Moon backgrounds mark the moments when everything was on the line and the fighter stayed.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Still learning. The Student Gi fighters are the most dangerous in the Dojo — they have no habits yet, no fixed patterns, no ceiling.
'Azuma' — east, the rising sun. Once a warrior whose hunger for the fight rose every morning: first over the wall, last off the field. Peacetime left the hunger nowhere to go.
Carried more than worn. The Pocket Glasses fighters have perfect vision when they choose to apply it — the rest of the time, they let instinct run.
Color and structure combined. The Orange Bantu Knots fighters make their warmth architectural.
Heavy, ceramic, purpose-built for one thing and used for another. The Giant Sake Bottle fighters are creative about their arsenal.
