Diary
Before the incense turned to weed smoke, Azuma was a blade with a reputation sharp enough to open conversations by itself, a warrior whose swagger cleared rooms before he even drew steel. Then came the afternoon at the main Buddhist temple, Oleg passing him a joint the size of a shrine offering, and Azuma, who had never once in his life taken the smaller portion of anything, inhaled like the war might start again and he needed the head start. He does not remember the chanting monks scattering, only waking up drooling on sacred stone with his honor apparently rolled into the same paper as the weed. Now he trains at dawn with the discipline of a man who has read about discipline in a pamphlet once, ballooning his ambitions bigger than his follow-through, swearing between naps and snack runs that today, today, he becomes legend again. The temple bell still rings every morning, and every morning Azuma tells it, mouth full of rice cakes, that he is definitely, absolutely, one hundred percent back.
Collected. Not borrowed. The Foes Teeth fighters carry proof of every fight they've won around their neck and find it a useful conversation starter.
Paper screens at night. The Shoji Night fighters were born in the quiet hours, when the market sleeps and only the committed are still at their screens.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
'Azuma' — east, the rising sun. Once a warrior whose hunger for the fight rose every morning: first over the wall, last off the field. Peacetime left the hunger nowhere to go.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Practical. Focused. The Hair Bun fighters pulled back what was in their eyes so they could see the whole board.
A live chicken. As a weapon. The Chicken fighters have committed to an approach that nobody expected and found that unexpectedness is half the battle.
