Diary
Fatty Bobsticks will tell you, unprompted and at volume, that he is nothing like Fat Bob, never mind the belly, never mind the name, never mind that they apparently ruined themselves the exact same way. It was the marketplace incident that did him in: some old rice-wine bravado, a purse fat with koku, and a mouth that decided the merchant women deserved a symphony of obscenities for the crime of haggling too well. By sundown his coin was gone, his reputation was ash, and the shadow of Fat Bob was laughing somewhere behind him, which only made Fatty louder about how HE is the original, HE is the real one, HE just happened to also lose everything shouting curses at women buying turnips. Now he sits cross-legged at the temple steps insisting he's found enlightenment, though he still mutters at pigeons who cut him off, still keeps one fist clenched through every meditation, still argues with a shadow that never talks back. He calls it Buddhism. The monks call it Tuesday. He'll be enlightened any day now, he swears, right after this next argument he's having with nobody.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Paper screens at night. The Shoji Night fighters were born in the quiet hours, when the market sleeps and only the committed are still at their screens.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
He exists in Fat Bob's extended universe — related, distinct, and absolutely exhausted by the comparison. Same build, same laugh, different problems. Do not, he begs you, get them confused.
Traditional, ornamented. The Shoji Tassel Glasses fighters dress their perception in ceremony — seeing is a ritual for them, not a reflex.
On fire, stable. The Burning Basket fighters operate in conditions most find impossible and have stopped noticing the fire.
The poisonous pufferfish as a weapon. The Frightened Fugu fighters chose something lethal that looks absurd — and find that this is the most accurate description of themselves.
