Goro was the youngest of nine brothers, and youngest sons learn early that patience is the only weapon nobody can take from you, so he built his whole self around waiting, watching, letting the world tire itself out before he ever moved. He carried that stillness through decades of ronin drifting, through empty dojos and emptier purses, until the day the Imperial guard, half as a joke and half as a dare, invited him to bathe in the sacred pools beneath the Emperor's Palace, the ones seeded with vipers for reasons no monk would explain. He sat in that water like stone, counting his breaths, telling himself a real samurai outlasts fear itself, right up until the moment a snake looped lazily around his ankle and something in him just left the building. Now Goro apes into every degenerate scheme within arm's reach, jittery, twitchy, allergic to silence, a man who spent forty years mastering stillness and lost it all to one cold, patient little snake. He tells anyone who'll listen he regrets nothing, though his hands still shake reaching for the dice, and somewhere underneath the bravado he's still trying, badly, to find that old quiet again.”
