Diary
Goro was the youngest of his dojo brothers once, and youngest learns early that the world rewards the one who waits, so he waited, quiet as a stone in a dry riverbed, while the other ronin drank and gambled their honor into the mud. He drifted eventually into the men's pleasure house on the edge of town, not for its pleasures but to watch, counting coins and tells the way he once counted breaths before a strike, until one slow night he simply relieved a table of drunk degens of their winnings and walked out clean, calling it karma rather than theft. Something shifted in him after that, some old samurai hinge creaking back toward true, and he told himself he was a good man now, reformed, done with vice. Yet Goro still lingers by that same lantern-lit door most evenings, patient as ever, insisting to himself he is only watching, only waiting for healthier pleasures to come find him instead. They have not come yet, and he is, as always, willing to wait a little longer, even as his own discipline slips quietly back through the same door he swore he'd shut for good.
Worn as trophy or warning — nobody is quite sure which. The Chicken Bones fighters have a ceremony for everything and share it with no one.
Hidden in plain sight. The Night Forest fighters do most of their work in the dark — not secretively, but quietly. They don't need an audience.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Left the order. Didn't stop fighting. The Dejen Apostate fighters broke from whatever school trained them and found that the training stayed anyway.
'Goro' — fifth son, who learns early the world won't wait, so he'd better learn to wait for it. Patience was his whole art: the one who held position long after holding stopped making sense.
Long range. The Telescopic Glasses fighters are already looking at what comes next while everyone else is still processing now.
Named for the legendary fighter. The Red Heihachi fighters carry that name's weight in every match and find it light.
Repurposed. Made for the earth, used for the fight. The Farmers Hoe fighters don't distinguish between cultivation and combat.
