Junichiro had rated the noodle house's broth a 9.4 out of 10, docked for a garnish he deemed 'aesthetically lazy,' before he ever agreed to nap among the priests who ran the place. He told himself it was a strategic rest, a disciplined recalibration between bowls, the kind of precision-sleep his old dojo masters would have approved of, though no master ever taught him to pass out mid-lecture on tofu ratios. He woke to a crack in his elbow sharp as a broken brushstroke, one priest snoring on his forearm like it was a temple pillow, and somewhere in his ruined posture he felt his whole life's grading system collapse to zero. Since then he's been unraveling in that particular Junichiro way, measuring his own madness against an invisible rubric, muttering 'still an 8, still an 8' as he tries and fails to hold his chopsticks with proper form. He knows a real samurai wouldn't have aped into a nap with clergy over noodles, knows discipline was rugged out of him one soft snore at a time, and he hates that some small stoned corner of him found the whole disaster kind of beautiful.
