While the fool was still counting stars, some quicker degenerate lifted Oleg's purse clean off his belt, and Oleg simply watched the tracks vanish down the ridge without so much as a shrug. No chase, no outrage, no excuse offered to the wind. He tells himself discipline is a blade he still carries, but the truth sits colder than the mountain air: he let it happen because watching Botan crumple was payment enough for him. He can do better, he mutters to no one, already knowing he won't, and somehow that's the most honest thing about him.”
