Diary
Oleg does not laugh at the boar story, because Oleg does not laugh at anything, and he tells it the way other men recite scripture: at midnight, in the black teeth of the forest, the beast came for him and he met it with the flat calm of a man settling a debt, and when the arm snapped he registered the sound the way a swordsman registers a clean cut, correct, inevitable, deserved. He set the bone himself by torchlight, wrapped it in a strip of his own gi, and walked home already composing the quieter life he intended to build from the wreckage, a life of tea, of silence, of dawn katas performed without witnesses. That life lasted four days before the dojo's dice game pulled him back in, and now he sits at the felt with his splinted arm propped like a relic, betting with the grim devotion of a man who has confused discipline with simply doing the wrong thing very seriously. He loses every hand without changing expression, because to Oleg losing is just another wild boar, another debt to be met without flinching, another problem to be solved by main force at an hour when reasonable men are asleep. He still says, without irony, that he is looking for peace, and the dojo still watches him ape into the next round and thinks, not unkindly, that peace has never once looked so much like war.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Military patience. The Olive Green fighters do not announce themselves. They wait. Then they move.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Sovereignty in fabric form. The Queeny Chic fighters dress with authority that was never granted by anyone else and therefore can't be revoked.
Of all the Olegs, the one who never got the memo any of it was supposed to be funny. He made war a vocation — grave, total, and frightening for exactly that reason.
Still wearing them. The Bloodied Glasses fighters need nothing to be clean to keep seeing clearly.
Wild, electrified. The Zapachi fighters' hair moves independently and the fighter has accepted that this is appropriate.
Chain-sickle, aged. The Rusty Kusarigama fighters have been in more fights than maintenance sessions.
