Diary
Botan once swore an oath in a dojo that no longer stands, a vow of discipline that has since been rugged by sake, weed, and whatever chaos the universe aped into his path, and tonight the universe chose an izakaya. Seated across from Goro, mid-bite on grilled skewers, an unseen hand found his thigh under the table, bold as a rogue liquidity pull, and where any sane ronin would have drawn steel or at least yelped, Botan simply chewed slower, eyes half-lidding, and murmured that whoever it was had excellent entry timing. Goro choked on his beer, scandalized, but Botan felt nothing resembling alarm, only a warm curious hum, because fear was surgically removed from him years ago along with any sense of when to be embarrassed. He tried, for one flickering moment, to summon the old samurai composure, spine straight, jaw set, the discipline his masters drilled into him, but it slid off him like grease off a hot skewer the instant the hand gave one more confident squeeze. By the time the bill came he was grinning like a man who just got floor-priced by fate and thanked it anyway, already wondering aloud if the mystery hand took requests.
Simple. Carved. Someone made this by hand. The Wooden Loop fighters wear something made, not bought, and consider that a statement worth making.
Bright but not loud. The Teal Daytime fighters are the ones you underestimate because they don't announce their arrival.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
It's been that kind of day. The Bloody Mess clothing doesn't mean the fighter lost — it means they were in it deep enough that cleanliness became irrelevant.
'Botan' — a peony, a beautiful flower on a genuinely terrible situation. Somewhere in the wars he saw a thing that removed his fear permanently and never gave it back.
Paper screen optics. The Shoji Glasses fighters see the world through traditional frames — and find that the tradition holds.
Clean but rough. The White Ruffian fighters look like they could have behaved properly and chose not to. The white makes the choice more visible.
The floor weapon. Everywhere. Common because common is honest — the Rusty Nail fighters know that what you find is often better than what you planned.
