Diary
Yuuki once stood unmoved as arrows split the air around his ancestors' banners, and that same unshakeable calm carried him straight into the heart of the Nagasaki Lantern Festival, chin up, chest bare, ready for whatever the night demanded. What the night demanded, apparently, was that a small army of elderly festivalgoers use him as a spittoon, and he took it the way a true bushi takes anything, with grim acceptance and zero tactical retreat. By the third grandmother he was bleeding from both nipples, lanterns glowing overhead like some cruel cosmic joke at his expense, and still he did not flinch, because discipline is discipline even when it is deeply, hilariously misapplied. He told himself this was training, some ancient trial disguised as chaos, though privately he suspected he just has a talent for standing in the wrong spot at the worst possible moment. Later, patching himself up with sake and a look of quiet, wounded dignity, he decided the old masters never covered this particular lesson, and maybe that was for the best.
Not contacts. Not paint. Something older. The Shaman Eyes fighters see through the collection at a frequency others can't access, and they've been doing it since before the derug.
Bright but not loud. The Teal Daytime fighters are the ones you underestimate because they don't announce their arrival.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Memento mori made fashionable. The Skull Kimono fighters remember what's at stake and wear the reminder so they never forget.
'Yuuki' means courage, earned the plain way: by stepping forward on the mornings every sane part of him voted to step back. Bravery, for him, was a decision made fresh each day.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Named for sensation. The Splitting Axe Ache fighters' hair is named for how their opponents feel after they're done.
The poisonous pufferfish as a weapon. The Frightened Fugu fighters chose something lethal that looks absurd — and find that this is the most accurate description of themselves.
