Long before he was a category of misfortune spoken about in hushed tones across every teahouse, Legless Tom had been a sword arm without equal, all the way down to feet that had once carried him through three campaigns. Then the wars dried up, the discipline curdled into vice, and one grey morning The English Pilot found him sprawled stoned, drunk, and gloriously naked on Degens path, cackling at a sky that owed him nothing. A friendship was forged on the spot, mostly because Tom could not stand up to leave, and honestly neither of them tried very hard to fix that. He swears each dawn he will meditate, sober up, and reclaim the warrior he was, then reaches for the gourd and the weed instead and loses that fight before he has even risen. From the waist up he remains an unstoppable, grinning menace, which he insists is more than enough dojo for one degen.
