They say anger is the mask grief wears when it's too proud to cry, and Ikari wore that mask like armor long after the wars ended, fists always cocked at enemies who stopped showing up. Then came the dice, the neon, and Igor's smug little smile in the red light district, and Ikari aped his last shred of dignity into a game he never had the discipline to walk away from. He lost, obviously, because the house always wins and Igor always deals from the bottom, and now the vein in his temple throbs not from rage at the world but from rage at himself, which is a far uglier kind of fire. He tells himself every morning that today is the day he meditates, breathes, becomes the calm blade he once was, and every morning he ends up screaming at a vending machine that ate his last coin like it owed him nothing. Broken men still swing hardest, and Ikari swings at ghosts, at Igor, at the version of himself that never should have sat down at that table, furious and honest and utterly, magnificently rugged.
