The vein on Ikari's neck was already a live wire before the pickpocket even touched his sleeve, throbbing in the summer heat like it knew Masumi's voice was the last soft thing he'd hear all day. He was mid-sentence, mid-laugh even, some old joke about koi ponds and honor, when his wallet vanished faster than his last three trades, rugged in broad daylight by a hand he never saw and a face he'll never forget not seeing. "Anger is a wind which blows out the lamp of the mind," some dead sensei once wrote, and Ikari has that quote tattooed somewhere he won't show you, right next to the one that says the opposite, because he contains both and neither ever wins. He tried, for one whole breath, to let it go like a true disciplined blade should, exhaled, unclenched his fist, remembered the floor price of his patience, and then put it right back through a nearby fence post. Now he walks the streets a proud man with an empty pocket and a full chest, daring the heat, the crowds, and his own worthless self-control to give him one more reason.”
