Diary
Haru snapped his grandfather's katana clean in half inside the gambling house, a joint dangling from his lips and a losing hand of cards fanned out before him, and he laughed so hard the dealer thought he'd won something instead of shattered a family heirloom. He held up the two jagged pieces like they were trophies, grinning wide enough to hide the little crack spreading through his own chest, insisting the blade had simply retired early to enjoy its golden years, just like him. That night he announced, between hits and hiccups, that he would open a self-defense dojo, teaching discipline to the next generation, conveniently ignoring that he couldn't currently defend a bowl of edamame from himself. He shows up to his own practice sessions three hours late, bowing cheerfully to an empty room, promising the tatami mats he'll be better tomorrow. Underneath the grin, though, something steel-eyed and tired remembers when his hands used to be steady, and hopes nobody notices it's still trying to hold on.
Whose bones? The fighter who wears them knows. They're not saying. The Finger Bones fighters operate on a level of commitment that most find uncomfortable.
Military patience. The Olive Green fighters do not announce themselves. They wait. Then they move.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Minimum. Clean. The Fight Gi fighters believe that preparation is visible in the garment — this one says the fighter has done this before.
The man who decided grinning was braver than breaking. He held a line so long his smile became the squad's good-luck charm; now he beams through the wreckage of peacetime, a very tired samurai behind the widest smile in the Dojo.
Long range. The Telescopic Glasses fighters are already looking at what comes next while everyone else is still processing now.
The tiger, bound. The Tiger Headband Ruffian fighters contain something predatory with a strip of cloth and consider this sufficient.
Organization-issue. The Yakuza Club fighters have backup in the weight of the weapon itself — it carries institutional authority.
