📖 Cheery Haru's Story

Haru held a line so long that the men behind him started calling his smile good luck, and he kept smiling because it was the only order he could still give himself. When the wars ended he had no line left to hold and no one left to reassure, which is a strange kind of unemployment for a man whose whole job was hope. So he brought the grin to the dojo instead, where the sake is warm and the company is worse, and he has been beaming through the wreckage ever since. Ask Haru how he is and he will tell you he has never been better, and he will mean it, mostly. The cheer is not a lie. It is a wall he built with his own hands, and behind it is a very tired samurai who decided, on purpose, that grinning was braver than breaking. He still calls the dojo to dawn drills, bright and disciplined as any master, and by noon he has talked everyone into sake and himself into a nap. Tomorrow, he swears, is the day he gets it together, and he has meant it every single morning for years.
