Haru still tells it like a punchline: he went looking for a riding master and found instead a crew of grinning scumbags on horseback who taught him to cut corners before they ever taught him to cut an enemy, and somewhere in all that hoofbeat and cheap sake his integrity slipped off the saddle and got left in the dust of some nameless road outside a paddy field he can no longer name. He laughs about it now, big and easy, the same laugh he used back when his sensei corrected his stance, because if the grin stays up nobody has to see the part of him that still flinches at the memory. Every morning he swears today is the day he rebuilds the old discipline, wakes at dawn, bows to no one in particular, promises himself no gambling and no weed until sundown, and by noon he is aped into a dice game with three guys he met an hour ago, chanting that it is fine, it is just today, tomorrow is the real start. Underneath the grin there is iron, there really is, the same iron that once held a blade steady, but these days it mostly holds his resolve together for about as long as a bad hand of cards. He lives one day at a time now, not out of wisdom but because looking further than that means looking at everything he lost on horseback, and Haru would rather grin, ante up, and lose again tomorrow with a smile nobody can rug.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Hidden in plain sight. The Night Forest fighters do most of their work in the dark — not secretively, but quietly. They don't need an audience.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
No fixed allegiance. The Mercenary fighters fight for whoever offers the right terms and have never lost a battle when those terms were met.
The man who decided grinning was braver than breaking. He held a line so long his smile became the squad's good-luck charm; now he beams through the wreckage of peacetime, a very tired samurai behind the widest smile in the Dojo.
Precious material on the most important tool. The Golden Glasses fighters invested in how they see — and the investment shows.
Clean but rough. The White Ruffian fighters look like they could have behaved properly and chose not to. The white makes the choice more visible.
Organization-issue. The Yakuza Club fighters have backup in the weight of the weapon itself — it carries institutional authority.
