Diary
Haru grins the way sunrise grins, wide and relentless, even now, even here, curled shoulder to shoulder with three snoring priests in the back room of a Kyoto gambling den where his honor politely excused itself and never came back. He tells anyone who asks that he was simply meditating with the monks between hands of hanafuda, a little shared nap for spiritual clarity, nothing to see, samurai do yoga too. The truth, tucked under his ribs like a blade he refuses to sheath, is that he fell asleep mid-bet, dreaming of dojo mornings and disciplined breath, and woke to find his coin purse empty and his dignity somewhere on the floor with the sake cups. Every dawn he vows to rise before the sun, meditate, train, become the stoic blade he once was, and every dawn he instead wakes at noon in a den full of holy men who gamble worse than he does, laughing it off with a thumbs up and a
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Unclear until it clears. The Grey Mist backgrounds belong to fighters who operate where others can't see, and use that fog as their advantage.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Kept from the harvest. The Dried Straw fighters dress in what's left after everything useful has been taken — and have discovered this is plenty.
The man who decided grinning was braver than breaking. He held a line so long his smile became the squad's good-luck charm; now he beams through the wreckage of peacetime, a very tired samurai behind the widest smile in the Dojo.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Focus made visible. The Karate Headband fighters bound their intention around their skull so it couldn't escape during the fight.
