Diary
Snow fell soft and silent over the ryokan courtyard the night some stranger's hands wandered where no hands belonged, and Haru, ever the sunbeam in human form, decided on the spot that this was actually a win. He beamed through the whole ordeal, bowing afterward like he'd just cleared a boss fight, telling himself a true samurai endures worse indignities than a bad touch in the cold. Later, wrapped in a blanket with a joint half lit and a bag of shrooms he swore he'd only microdose, he toasted himself for staying so composed, so relentlessly pleasant, even as something old and disciplined inside him quietly screamed into the snowbank. He tried, as always, to meditate it away, to breathe like his sensei once taught him, but the breath kept turning into a nervous giggle and the giggle into another hit. Still grinning, always grinning, Haru told the boys the next morning it was the best night of his life, and somewhere beneath the grin, the ronin who once knew stillness wept quietly into his hot cocoa.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Unclear until it clears. The Grey Mist backgrounds belong to fighters who operate where others can't see, and use that fog as their advantage.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Self-described. The Womanizer clothing is a declaration that the fighter has a particular relationship with the world and considers this worth advertising.
The man who decided grinning was braver than breaking. He held a line so long his smile became the squad's good-luck charm; now he beams through the wreckage of peacetime, a very tired samurai behind the widest smile in the Dojo.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Aged. Sharp. The Short Spiky Grey fighters have been here long enough for color to leave — and found that what remained is more pointed than before.
Used and not cleaned. The Bloody Nunchucks fighters are efficient — cleaning was someone else's job and they had the next fight to prepare for.
