Diary
Haru grinned through the steam of the onsen like it owed him money, blade flicking out to skewer a rat mid-scurry while some daimyo's wife shrieked about propriety and pearls. He apologized with the biggest smile a man has ever weaponized, told her the rat had it coming, told himself the same thing about the discipline he lost somewhere between the last war and his third bowl of the day. Underneath the grin was the old samurai who used to meditate before dawn, who now meditates on whether the local card game counts as inner peace, and the answer is always a cheerful, resounding no. He tucked the dead rat into his sleeve like a trophy, bowed low enough to seem humble, and walked off insisting today was, without question, his best day yet. Somewhere his old sensei wept, but Haru was too busy smiling to notice, which honestly might be the whole problem.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Royalty that refused the crown. The Purple Night backgrounds belong to fighters who could have been somewhere easier and chose not to be.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
The man who decided grinning was braver than breaking. He held a line so long his smile became the squad's good-luck charm; now he beams through the wreckage of peacetime, a very tired samurai behind the widest smile in the Dojo.
Carried more than worn. The Pocket Glasses fighters have perfect vision when they choose to apply it — the rest of the time, they let instinct run.
The Dojo's version of a mohawk. More specific, more named. The Dejen Mohawk fighters chose the Dojo's interpretation of rebellion over the generic one.
Not metaphorical. Someone's leg bone, spiked. The Spiky Femur fighters have been here long enough that the bones of their enemies are now equipment.
