Haru grinned through the whole Darkness Festival like it was the sun itself, even as the crowd around him screamed and the fish cake stalls glowed like little shrines to bad decisions. He'd told himself, samurai discipline, three cakes max, savor them like a tea ceremony, but by the seventh skewer his shirt was soaked through and his nipples were weeping actual blood from the friction of fabric and fried batter and pure unrelenting appetite. Somewhere under all that laughing there's a version of Haru who once stood at dawn with a blade, still and quiet, but that guy got rugged by karaage and communal sake years ago and never filed a complaint. No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
