Diary
Haru stripped down to his skin right there in the snowdrift outside Kyoto's old barracks, grinning like it was the funniest bit he'd ever pulled, while three retired samurai stood over him demanding to know why a man who once carried a blade with such grace now carried nothing but a half-empty jug and a bad idea. He laughed the whole argument off, cheeks pink from cold and rice wine both, insisting he was just airing out his chi, that discipline was overrated anyway, that the old masters never lived long enough to enjoy a snow day. Underneath the jokes, though, something in him flinched every time they mentioned the dojo he used to bow into every morning, back when his hands were steady and his mind wasn't chasing the next high or the next laugh to cover the ache. He told himself, shivering and bare in the drifts, that tomorrow he'd wake at dawn, meditate, maybe even find his old training weeds instead of the other kind, and be the disciplined warrior again. Tomorrow came and went, as it always does for Haru, but at least he froze his ass off with a smile on his face, which he figures counts as character growth of some sort.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Lived-in color. The Warm Grey background belongs to fighters who have been through enough that their edges have softened without their core changing.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
No clothing needed. The Shirtless Runt fighters removed every layer between themselves and the fight. Maximum exposure. Maximum honesty.
The man who decided grinning was braver than breaking. He held a line so long his smile became the squad's good-luck charm; now he beams through the wreckage of peacetime, a very tired samurai behind the widest smile in the Dojo.
Carried more than worn. The Pocket Glasses fighters have perfect vision when they choose to apply it — the rest of the time, they let instinct run.
Named for what grew. The Wise Greatness fighters became something across time that couldn't be rushed and didn't try to be.
The other fish weapon. The Dead Fish fighters use something that smells like loss as a weapon — opponents are too confused to defend properly.
