Diary
Azuma still swears the bamboo forest smelled like ambition that day, all green and sharp, right before some mouthy Yakuza lieutenant talked one insult too many and got himself perforated for it, an argument that escalated the way Azuma's appetite always escalates, from zero to way too far in about four seconds flat. He didn't mean to end a man, not really, he just meant to win, the way he means to win every hand of cards, every drinking contest, every ill-advised bet he apes into with the discipline of a starving dog let loose in a noodle shop. Retirement was supposed to fix that, hang up the blade, breathe, meditate, become some serene ronin who sips tea and watches leaves fall, and for about six hours Azuma genuinely tried, sitting cross-legged, chanting, before he remembered there was a dice game three towns over and his floor for restraint dropped straight through the ground. Now he calls himself reformed between mouthfuls of everything in sight, still loud, still greedy, still haunted by bamboo stalks and the one fight that actually mattered, chasing a peace he keeps rugging himself out of every single time.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Unclear until it clears. The Grey Mist backgrounds belong to fighters who operate where others can't see, and use that fog as their advantage.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Kept from the harvest. The Dried Straw fighters dress in what's left after everything useful has been taken — and have discovered this is plenty.
'Azuma' — east, the rising sun. Once a warrior whose hunger for the fight rose every morning: first over the wall, last off the field. Peacetime left the hunger nowhere to go.
Carried more than worn. The Pocket Glasses fighters have perfect vision when they choose to apply it — the rest of the time, they let instinct run.
Mastery without ceremony. The Kung Fu Master fighters stopped needing to prove the title long before anyone stopped asking for proof.
