Diary
Once Azuma's blade answered only to duty, but duty went bankrupt the day the wars ended and left his belly howling for something, anything, to chew on. He went scavenging down Degens Path with the same hunger a starving man brings to an all-you-can-eat buffet, pockets out, eyes wild, mouth already watering for ryo that was never his to find. Respectability slipped off him somewhere between the third dice roll and the fifth cup of sake, and nobody, least of all Azuma, bothered chasing it down the road after it left. Now he squats in a dirty gambling den lit by one flickering lantern, roaring odds at drunks and shaving points off every pot, loud as a war drum with none of the honor. Every dawn he swears he'll fold up the tables and return to discipline, and every dawn discipline gets rugged by the smell of fresh coin and cheaper weed.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Lived-in color. The Warm Grey background belongs to fighters who have been through enough that their edges have softened without their core changing.
Shuren (修練) is discipline: the rest of the Mint cards, the ones that never cracked. Purple Evening, lifted.
'Azuma' — east, the rising sun. Once a warrior whose hunger for the fight rose every morning: first over the wall, last off the field. Peacetime left the hunger nowhere to go.
Wore everything out. The Dirty Peasant Rags fighters have been in the Dojo so long that newness has become impossible — everything they own carries the evidence.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Focus made visible. The Karate Headband fighters bound their intention around their skull so it couldn't escape during the fight.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,468 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Stars on a strap. The Shuriken fighters carry more throwing stars than they will ever throw, because running out mid-fight is the one thing they still fear.
