Before he was Drooling Azuma, feared bringer of chaos, he was just a hungry ronin wandering the stalls of Nishiki Market with a belly full of unspent bushido and a wallet full of nothing. The wars had ended, his sword arm had gone soft, and the only battlefield left was a spit of glistening yakitori turning slow and golden over the coals. He aped in with both hands, no discipline, no dignity, just grease dripping down his chin like the tears of every sensei who ever tried to teach him restraint. Somewhere between the ninth skewer and the moment a vendor threatened to call the shogunate, Azuma realized this, THIS, was his true calling, louder and hungrier than any war cry he'd ever mustered. He knows better now, he swears he does, he's even got a meal-prep app on his phone that he opens right before ordering seconds, thirds, and a mystery fourth thing he can't pronounce, floor of his own stomach rugged every single time.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Military patience. The Olive Green fighters do not announce themselves. They wait. Then they move.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
'Azuma' — east, the rising sun. Once a warrior whose hunger for the fight rose every morning: first over the wall, last off the field. Peacetime left the hunger nowhere to go.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
The poisonous pufferfish as a weapon. The Frightened Fugu fighters chose something lethal that looks absurd — and find that this is the most accurate description of themselves.
