Diary
In the Meiji Jungle, Gloomy Masumi ate chicken the way he once drew his blade, with total commitment and zero foresight, and somewhere around the ninth thigh he began speaking truths nobody at the table had asked for. He told the others that their forms were sloppy, their honor was theater, and that the dojo they all missed had probably been mediocre even in its prime, which was true, and which is why it hurt. Grease still on his knuckles, he watched their faces curdle and understood, with the flat clarity that follows every one of his meals, that he had once again mistaken a full stomach for wisdom. He will apologize tomorrow, or he will not, because discipline was supposed to mean restraint and instead it just means he now regrets things on a fuller stomach than before. Still, he looks forward to better days, mostly because the alternative is looking forward to nothing, and even Masumi has standards.
Heavier than gold. Less prestigious. More honest. The Iron Earring fighters chose function over signal and consider that to be the signal.
Hidden in plain sight. The Night Forest fighters do most of their work in the dark — not secretively, but quietly. They don't need an audience.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
'Masumi' means true clarity — and that's exactly his problem. He sees what's actually there, not the comfortable version, which made him priceless in war and unbearable at a party.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Architecture on the scalp. Each knot a decision. The Black Bantu Knots fighters make their choices visible at the top, where everyone can see.
Repurposed. Made for the earth, used for the fight. The Farmers Hoe fighters don't distinguish between cultivation and combat.
