Diary
Masumi tells it flat, the way he tells everything, which is to say like a man reading a coroner's report on his own life: he was dreaming of glory, the old kind, the kind with banners and drums, and in the middle of that dream a snake slithered across a crowded street and he killed it without breaking stride, without ceremony, without even really waking up. No one cheered. No one noticed. A man selling grilled skewers stepped over the body and kept yelling prices. Masumi says this is accurate, this is how glory actually arrives, small and damp and immediately forgotten, and he says it with the calm of someone who tried meditation once and it made him more depressed with better posture. He still sets a five a.m. alarm meant to summon the disciplined swordsman he used to be, and he still turns it off, and he still tells himself, without much hope but without giving up either, that better days are coming, the way a man floating downriver tells himself the waterfall ahead is probably fine.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Hidden in plain sight. The Night Forest fighters do most of their work in the dark — not secretively, but quietly. They don't need an audience.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
After the rice was used. The Rice Sack Rags fighters wear what remains after everything useful has been extracted — and find it sufficient.
'Masumi' means true clarity — and that's exactly his problem. He sees what's actually there, not the comfortable version, which made him priceless in war and unbearable at a party.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Practical. Focused. The Hair Bun fighters pulled back what was in their eyes so they could see the whole board.
Used and not cleaned. The Bloody Nunchucks fighters are efficient — cleaning was someone else's job and they had the next fight to prepare for.
