Goro was always the one who waited, youngest of his line, the last to speak and the last to strike, and he carried that same stillness onto the shogun trials in Okinawa where louder men rushed in and broke themselves on each other's blades. He watched instead, patient as low tide, until the day a pig wandered the training grounds and looked at him the way no rival ever had, without ambition, without threat, just calm animal certainty, and something in Goro's long-guarded heart finally stopped waiting and simply arrived. The shogunate slipped away while he was busy falling, floor price on his own destiny dumping to zero as he chose devotion over conquest, and nobody in the dojo let him forget it. Now he stands on street corners doing the only work left to a disgraced almost-warrior, still watchful, still unhurried, selling glances and small hours for coin while he waits, with that same maddening patience, for a life that will apparently never rug him again the way that pig never did.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Between midday and dusk. The Orange Afternoon fighters are in the middle of something — not finished, not starting, exactly where they need to be.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Not a garment — a record. The Battle Scars clothing is what's left after everything else was stripped away. These fighters wear their history.
'Goro' — fifth son, who learns early the world won't wait, so he'd better learn to wait for it. Patience was his whole art: the one who held position long after holding stopped making sense.
