Now he sits at the edge of the bar with a jug of shochu in front of him, telling himself this is just another exercise in patience, that grief burns off slow if you let it, though anyone watching can see the old discipline slipping through his fingers one cup at a time. Still he waits, silent and watchful even in defeat, as if sorrow itself might eventually get bored and leave first.'
