Diary
Goro said nothing for most of the Nagasaki Lantern Festival, the way he'd said nothing for most of his life as the youngest brother, letting older, louder swords speak first while he watched the paper lanterns drift and waited for the moment worth moving in. That moment turned out to be Bob, standing alone by the noodle stalls looking like a man who'd aped into the wrong alley, and Goro drifted over slow as smoke and just listened, nodding, patient as a stone that outlasts the river. He didn't brag, didn't pitch, didn't ask Bob to floor him a favor, he simply waited Bob out the way he waits out everything, and somewhere between the third lantern and the second cup of shochu the respect just arrived on its own, unrugged and unforced. The Dojo noticed, because the Dojo always notices who can sit still in the middle of chaos without reaching for a blade or a blunt, and for one quiet night Goro looked less like a degenerate ronin chasing lost discipline and more like the disciplined kid he used to be. Of course by morning he was back to snoozing through drills and losing staring contests to his own reflection, patience apparently working better on strangers named Bob than on himself.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Hidden in plain sight. The Night Forest fighters do most of their work in the dark — not secretively, but quietly. They don't need an audience.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Kept from the harvest. The Dried Straw fighters dress in what's left after everything useful has been taken — and have discovered this is plenty.
'Goro' — fifth son, who learns early the world won't wait, so he'd better learn to wait for it. Patience was his whole art: the one who held position long after holding stopped making sense.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Practical and armed. The Hair Bun With Chopsticks fighters put utensils in their hair and call it hair care — the dual function is not accidental.
The poisonous pufferfish as a weapon. The Frightened Fugu fighters chose something lethal that looks absurd — and find that this is the most accurate description of themselves.
