That patience carried him through a hundred quiet victories, but it could not save him the day his stomach declared its own rebellion mid-bout, right there in the practice yard, dirt turning to something no honorable ancestor would ever want etched into the clan scrolls. He did not flinch, did not cry out, just knelt there with the same still, watchful calm he brought to everything, as if outlasting the humiliation the way he outlasted every opponent. Now, between hits off a joint that trembles slightly more than his hands ever did with a blade, he tells himself he has moved past it, that the incident is buried as deep as the dirt that swallowed it, though anyone who watches him go quiet and still whenever someone mentions
