Diary
Goro was always the last to speak, the youngest of his line, taught early that patience outlasts every blade and every fool who swings first. So when the dojo elders sent him out on horseback to clear his mind before the winter trials, he did what he always did, he waited, he breathed, he let the world go quiet around him. But the mind he cleared wasn't calm, it was empty in the way a rugged wallet is empty, and somewhere between the ride out and the ride back his honor slipped off the saddle and rolled into a ditch he never bothered to check. He tells people now that he was meditating, that it was strategy, that the youngest brother always plays the long game, but everyone at the dojo knows patience only counts if you're waiting for something worth having. Still he sits watchful at the edge of every gambling circle, silent, saddle-sore, a true degen who mastered stillness and lost everything else to it.
Without the gold. The Jesuit Crosses fighters have the same conviction but carry it lighter — the weight is in the belief, not the metal.
Paper screens at night. The Shoji Night fighters were born in the quiet hours, when the market sleeps and only the committed are still at their screens.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
'Goro' — fifth son, who learns early the world won't wait, so he'd better learn to wait for it. Patience was his whole art: the one who held position long after holding stopped making sense.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Practical and armed. The Hair Bun With Chopsticks fighters put utensils in their hair and call it hair care — the dual function is not accidental.
Not metaphorical. Someone's leg bone, spiked. The Spiky Femur fighters have been here long enough that the bones of their enemies are now equipment.
