Goro was the youngest of his line, and the youngest always learns to wait, watching older blades dull themselves on other men's battles while he stayed still and counted breaths. So when the wars ended he told himself he would simply wait out this new soft world the way he waited out everything else, quiet as a stone in a garden. Instead he found himself parked at the same izakaya stool night after night, insisting each cup of shochu was clearing his mind rather than drowning it, his confidence swelling like a river before it floods a village. He has not slept in seven days now, eyes rimmed red, telling the bartender he is simply being patient with his own exhaustion, waiting for sleep to come to him instead of chasing it like some undignified rookie. Somewhere under the empty cups, the old disciplined samurai in him keeps watch, silent and unimpressed, still waiting for Goro to notice he has already lost.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Paper screens at night. The Shoji Night fighters were born in the quiet hours, when the market sleeps and only the committed are still at their screens.
