Goro was always the last to speak in his family, the runt who learned early that patience outlasts every loudmouth brother, so he simply waited while the wars ended and the others scattered into vice. Under a bridge one rain-soaked night he tried, quietly and without witnesses, to become great, some half-baked degen scheme involving a dice game and a promise he can no longer fully recall, and when it rugged him the way all bridge-schemes do, he sat in the mud and decided greatness was overrated and honor was not. Since then he has devoted himself to Buddha, folding his hands each dawn with the same stillness he once used to out-wait his siblings for the last bowl of rice, watching incense curl instead of watching a floor chart. Yet discipline is a slippery thing for a man who still keeps a joint tucked behind his ear during meditation, telling himself it is merely an offering he has not yet gotten around to burning. Goro says nothing about this contradiction, because saying nothing, after all, is the one practice he never had to relearn.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Between midday and dusk. The Orange Afternoon fighters are in the middle of something — not finished, not starting, exactly where they need to be.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Blessed by the Dojo's own rites. The Ordained Dejen fighters carry something that can't be revoked — the Dojo recognized them and that recognition is permanent.
'Goro' — fifth son, who learns early the world won't wait, so he'd better learn to wait for it. Patience was his whole art: the one who held position long after holding stopped making sense.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Practical. Focused. The Hair Bun fighters pulled back what was in their eyes so they could see the whole board.
Patience as weapon. The Noose fighters don't rush — they set the conditions and wait for the opponent to walk into them.
