Goro had always been the one who waited, the youngest at the dojo who learned patience the hard way, watching elders lose their tempers so he wouldn't have to lose his. That patience deserted him the night he crouched in the street with Igor over a dice game that promised easy floor gains, and he leaned in too fast, too greedy, and came down wrong on his own elbow. It cracked quiet as a whisper, the kind of injury that doesn't scream but just aches forever, a small betrayal from a body he thought he'd disciplined. Seven nights now he's lain awake, arm throbbing in its makeshift sling, replaying the roll of the dice like if he stares long enough the bones will land differently. He tells himself stillness is a virtue he still owns, even as his eyes stay open in the dark, still watching, still waiting for sleep that refuses to ape his patience back.
Without the gold. The Jesuit Crosses fighters have the same conviction but carry it lighter — the weight is in the belief, not the metal.
Hidden in plain sight. The Night Forest fighters do most of their work in the dark — not secretively, but quietly. They don't need an audience.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
'Goro' — fifth son, who learns early the world won't wait, so he'd better learn to wait for it. Patience was his whole art: the one who held position long after holding stopped making sense.

The tiger, bound. The Tiger Headband Ruffian fighters contain something predatory with a strip of cloth and consider this sufficient.
