Goro was always the last to speak and the last to strike, a habit forged from being the youngest of six brothers who learned that patience outlasts every tantrum thrown before it. He was a peaceful man once, sword sheathed more than drawn, content to watch the seasons turn without needing to own them. Then the summer heat came thick as smoke and his coin purse came up empty, and something in him aped into a version of himself he did not recognize, robbing the poor along the dusty road with hands that used to only ever give. He still waited, still watched, but now it was for the right moment to strike rather than the right moment to help, and the floor of his own character dropped out from under him quietly, the way these things do. He tells himself the shame humbled him, made him wiser, though anyone watching close enough can see he is still waiting, patient as ever, for the day he can afford to be good again.'
