In the back room of the gambling house, amid the stink of shochu and the clatter of dice, Lovey Haruto sat cross-legged with a whittling knife, coaxing wooden swords out of scrap timber for anyone who asked, smiling like he was still someone's sensei. A drunk in a torn kimono sneered that a real samurai wouldn't be caught carving toys for degens with empty pockets, that his honor had gone soft as the pine shavings piling at his feet. Haruto only handed the man a finished blade anyway, told him it was a gift, and watched something like shame flicker across the drunk's face before it drowned back in sake. He meant to say something sharp in return, some old warrior's retort about honor being a discipline you practice daily like a blade you sharpen, but the words never came, so he just kept carving and let the moment slide into the smoke. He has chosen to forget the incident entirely, the way a man forgets a wound that healed wrong, and tells himself that kindness given freely never needs defending, even when the dojo he trained in would have called that surrender.
