Diary
Oleg had sworn, on the morning of his first cup, that he would drink with the solemnity of a man pouring sake at a grave, and for six minutes he did. Then Legless Tom crawled into the dojo latrines with a jug of something that smelled like a rugged floor price and a grin missing more teeth than sense, and the vow went the way of most vows in that place, which is to say it did not survive contact with Tom. Oleg does not remember shouting that the shogunate itself had been more honorably run than this bathroom summit, only that he did shout it, at length, with the terrible gravity he brings to everything, including degeneracy. He walked out before dawn and has not fully walked back, choosing instead a hut past the tree line where he practices forms alone and calls it discipline, though the empty jugs stacked outside his door tell a quieter, funnier truth. He still returns to the dojo once a season, unsmiling, to remind everyone that patience is a blade one must resharpen daily, and everyone nods, and no one tells him the blade rusted the day he met Tom in that latrine.”
Decorative. Traditional. The Tassel fighters know that ornament and function are not opposites — presentation is part of performance.
Between midday and dusk. The Orange Afternoon fighters are in the middle of something — not finished, not starting, exactly where they need to be.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Left the order. Didn't stop fighting. The Dejen Apostate fighters broke from whatever school trained them and found that the training stayed anyway.
Of all the Olegs, the one who never got the memo any of it was supposed to be funny. He made war a vocation — grave, total, and frightening for exactly that reason.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Architecture on the scalp. Each knot a decision. The Black Bantu Knots fighters make their choices visible at the top, where everyone can see.
Patience as weapon. The Noose fighters don't rush — they set the conditions and wait for the opponent to walk into them.
