Raiku passed him the pipe with a grin, and Oleg accepted it as one accepts a challenge, inhaling with the same grim focus he once brought to the blade, as if discipline itself could be smoked into the lungs and held there forever. The shaman's smoke curled and warped the lantern light, and Oleg's resolve, honed on a thousand mornings of solitary kata, wavered exactly once, a tremor he will deny under torture. He did not laugh when Raiku laughed. He did not blink when the walls seemed to breathe. And when dawn finally cracked over the lair's ash and silence, Oleg rose, brushed the ember dust from his gi, and vowed, as he always vows, that tomorrow he begins again, clean, disciplined, a warrior reborn, though tomorrow, like every tomorrow before it, will almost certainly smell of the same shaman's herb.
