Diary
Oleg had positioned himself at the center of the tatami mats with the discipline of a man expecting an ambush from any direction, which made it all the more unbearable that the ambush came from stillness itself. He was mid-sentence with Edmundo, discussing the correct posture for seppuku etiquette in a hypothetical he took entirely too seriously, when his katana vanished from its stand without so much as a whisper of steel. Oleg does not believe in coincidence, luck, or the merciful humor of the universe, so he has spent every night since running silent tactical drills against an enemy he cannot name and a blade he cannot recover. He has not told his family because in his mind the sword was not stolen, it was failed, and a failed weapon is a failure of the man who bore it. Every morning he vows to rebuild his discipline from nothing, and every morning he instead finds himself glaring suspiciously at Edmundo across the mats, certain that somewhere in that laughter lies the truth he refuses to laugh at.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
The hour when most give up. The Blue Evening fighters are still at their desk, still watching the chart, still holding.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
The standard-bearer. The Proud Dejen Kimono fighters represent the collection consciously — they know what they're part of and they dress accordingly.
Of all the Olegs, the one who never got the memo any of it was supposed to be funny. He made war a vocation — grave, total, and frightening for exactly that reason.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Time made visible, flowing. Flowing Dreads fighters carry their history in motion — every lock a year, and the years are moving now.
Organization-issue. The Yakuza Club fighters have backup in the weight of the weapon itself — it carries institutional authority.
