Diary
Oleg entered the yakiniku with the bearing of a man auditing an enemy encampment, his ledger of unpaid debts folded once, sharp as a blade, tucked inside his coat. He had trained under masters who wept at the beauty of a clean cut; now he searched grease-slicked booths for degens who owed him ryo from a coin flip nobody remembers agreeing to. They found him first, a circle of laughing fools reeking of shochu and skunk, and where another samurai might have seen an ambush, Oleg saw only witnesses, which he considered acceptable. He stood ringed by their heckling, spine straight as a temple pillar, reciting the terms of the debt like a death poem while they toasted him with grilled meat they had not offered to share, and something in his chest, some old iron thing meant for battlefields, unclenched for the first time in years. He left with no money and no answers, discipline in ruins around his ankles like a robe he forgot to tie, and told himself, gravely, that this was the best he had felt since the wars ended.
Heavier than gold. Less prestigious. More honest. The Iron Earring fighters chose function over signal and consider that to be the signal.
Neither dark nor white. The Light Grey background belongs to fighters who operate in the space between certainties and have made it comfortable there.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Not a garment — a record. The Battle Scars clothing is what's left after everything else was stripped away. These fighters wear their history.
Of all the Olegs, the one who never got the memo any of it was supposed to be funny. He made war a vocation — grave, total, and frightening for exactly that reason.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Focus made visible. The Karate Headband fighters bound their intention around their skull so it couldn't escape during the fight.
Found. Not forged. The Large Branch fighters don't wait for the right weapon — they use what's available and are surprised when this needs explanation.
