Oleg climbed to the palace roof the way he did everything, with the solemnity of a funeral procession, and found Legless Tom already there with two bottles of sake and no concept of the fall waiting below the tiles. He drank because refusal felt like a small death of its own, and he has never once, in his life, known how to do a small thing halfway; each cup was a vow, each vow a step nearer the edge, and he took both with a warrior's grim devotion. When his sandal slipped on the curved shingles and the courtyard swam up at him like a verdict, he did not scream, he only calculated, with terrible clarity, the exact angle of his own ending. Tom's hand caught his collar at the last possible instant, laughing the way only a man with nothing left to lose can laugh, while Oleg hung there rewriting his entire life in the space of a heartbeat. He returned to the dojo's floor mats the next dawn, vowing discipline anew, and by dusk was back on some rooftop somewhere, cup in hand, still mourning the disciplined swordsman he insists he almost was.
Not contacts. Not paint. Something older. The Shaman Eyes fighters see through the collection at a frequency others can't access, and they've been doing it since before the derug.
Bright but not loud. The Teal Daytime fighters are the ones you underestimate because they don't announce their arrival.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.

Of all the Olegs, the one who never got the memo any of it was supposed to be funny. He made war a vocation — grave, total, and frightening for exactly that reason.
