Oleg does not laugh at the story of the Edo palace, not once, not even when the others retell it with exaggerated hips and mocking sighs, because to Oleg the courtesans were not a joke but a siege, a coordinated dishonoring of a man who had only wanted to guard a door in peace. He filed a formal report in his head that night, in the old tongue, listing grievances against silk fans and painted smiles as though they were rival clans, and he has never once amended the record. Now he seeks a quieter life, which in the dojo means he sits cross-legged in the corner tracking his breath while everyone else apes into whatever token Yuki is yelling about, and he treats his meditation cushion like a fortified position that must not be rugged by chaos. Discipline, he insists gravely, is the last honor a ronin has left, and he says this while accidentally microdosing a floor sweeper's leftover weed edible because Kenji told him it was medicine for samurai knees. He chews slowly, face stone, certain that his silence is strategy and not simply the horrifying, blooming realization that the room has started very gently spinning.
