Diary
Serious Oleg does not remember the argument as an argument. He remembers it as a violation of bushido, a breach of ma-ai, the sacred distance a man must keep from his enemy at Dojo Towers. The Yakuza lieutenant said something about his floor price and his ancestors in the same breath, and before Oleg could draw steel or dignity, a hand found territory no negotiation had authorized. He has practiced, since that day, the ancient art of standing perfectly still while everything in him screams, and he calls this discipline, though everyone else calls it flinching. Even now, ordering another lukewarm sake at the bar he swore he would not return to, Oleg keeps one arm rigid at his side, a soldier's stance, a monk's vow, a man forever guarding a border that was already crossed.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Hidden in plain sight. The Night Forest fighters do most of their work in the dark — not secretively, but quietly. They don't need an audience.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Grew things before they fought things. The Farmer clothing is the clearest record of what a fighter was before the Dojo changed them.
Of all the Olegs, the one who never got the memo any of it was supposed to be funny. He made war a vocation — grave, total, and frightening for exactly that reason.
Carried more than worn. The Pocket Glasses fighters have perfect vision when they choose to apply it — the rest of the time, they let instinct run.
Aged. Sharp. The Short Spiky Grey fighters have been here long enough for color to leave — and found that what remained is more pointed than before.
The poisonous pufferfish as a weapon. The Frightened Fugu fighters chose something lethal that looks absurd — and find that this is the most accurate description of themselves.
