In the moss garden behind the dojo, Serious Oleg was sparring Azuma with the grim focus of a man who has never once smiled at his own reflection, when a snake slid across his stance and met the flat of his blade before either fighter could blink. He did not flinch, did not laugh, did not even acknowledge the gasps from the porch where the others had gathered with their bongs and their bad bets; he simply wiped the steel clean and resumed his forms as if discipline itself demanded the interruption be honored, not mourned. Later, when Azuma tried to rib him about it over warm sake, Oleg stared through him and said only that the snake had chosen its ground poorly, the same way a man chooses poorly when he apes into a chart he has not studied. He tells himself this is the last vestige of the old bushido in him, that a true warrior commits fully to every strike, though the truth is he has committed just as fully to three cups of sake and a losing hand of cards before the night is through. He regrets nothing about the snake, and everything about how far the discipline has slipped since the wars ended, though he would rather die again than admit the second part aloud.“
One tooth. The whole shark is implied. The Shark Tooth fighters don't need to explain what they've overcome — they wear the evidence.
Paper screens at night. The Shoji Night fighters were born in the quiet hours, when the market sleeps and only the committed are still at their screens.

Of all the Olegs, the one who never got the memo any of it was supposed to be funny. He made war a vocation — grave, total, and frightening for exactly that reason.
