Diary
Oleg does not remember laughter, only the weight of the moment, and so when he found himself circled by cackling degens outside the tea house at Kurayama, he did not flinch, he simply catalogued his failure with the precision of a man reviewing a lost battle. He had been shouting obscenities at women on horseback, an act he now recounts not with shame but with the grim clarity of a war report, as if his own mouth had betrayed a code he swore in some other life to uphold. The degens howled, someone spilled sake on his sandals, a rooster screamed nearby for no reason anyone could explain, and still Oleg stood rigid, jaw set, treating the whole absurd tableau as though it were the final stand at some forgotten pass. That night, by lantern light, he wrote a vow in a shaking, furious hand, to be a better man, to master the tongue before it masters him, and he has renewed that vow every dawn since, failing it by breakfast with the same solemn devotion he once gave to the blade. The dojo finds it hilarious. Oleg finds it a war he intends to win, eventually, seriously, without a single smile.”
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Bright but not loud. The Teal Daytime fighters are the ones you underestimate because they don't announce their arrival.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Named for what it abandoned. The No Honor Kimono fighters gave up on the codes others follow and found that this freed them completely.
Of all the Olegs, the one who never got the memo any of it was supposed to be funny. He made war a vocation — grave, total, and frightening for exactly that reason.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Named for what grew. The Wise Greatness fighters became something across time that couldn't be rushed and didn't try to be.
The weighted hook-blade on a rope. Distance and cutting in one weapon. The Heavy Kyoketsu fighters control range — nothing happens at a distance they didn't set.
